Reveal

The term “reveal” refers a piece of wood that is fitted to the space between the frame of a door or window and the outer surface of the wall that it’s attached to. It becomes the new frame of the window and eliminates places where moisture can enter the window.

When renovating the windows in an existing structure, you may be able to keep the reveal from the old window if replacing with a window of the same size. In new construction projects, there are standard sizes for reveals based on the materials of the finished wall.

A reveal is also discussed in carpentry when talking about the way that doors of cabinets and internal doors are framed as well. A tight or narrow reveal gives a more modern look with doors that seem to hinge right into the wall or cupboard. WIder reveals give a heavier look significant in many architectural styles.
