Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are used on homes across America, primarily because they are the least expensive roofing material available. Asphalt shingles come in a variety of colors, ensuring that a homeowner can match a color to their unique tastes and home.

Asphalt shingles are most often used on residential projects. They are easy and fast to install, and they are available in different textures. These types of shingles can be treated in such a way that the growth of mold and mildew is inhibited.

There are currently two categories of asphalt shingle available on the market: fiberglass and organic. Fiberglass shingles are treated with a coating that makes them waterproof. This category is also more fire retardant than organic shingles. Organic shingles, on the other hand, are made with paper and covered with asphalt.

In some cases, asphalt shingles are layered in such a way that they lend texture and interest to a home. Because they are so cost effective, layering has become a popular option among new home builders. While the price of a shingle can vary depending on the market and type of shingle being used, they normally cost between $90 and $300 a square.

If you are interested in learning more about asphalt shingles or your other roofing options for your custom home plan, an experienced home builder can offer you assistance. While you can certainly walk into any home improvement store and buy asphalt shingles off the shelf, it is typically not recommended unless you have roofing experience. Keep in mind that your roof protects your home, and can only do so if it’s properly installed.
